Sophie Neate Sculpture Project
Location: Jiu Qian, China
Date: 03/12/13 - 08/01/14
Australian artist Sophie Neate from Melbourne worked on one month Winter program at Jiu Qian Arts Can Do Centre in collaboration with Chinese artist Jin Shan from Shanghai throughout December till first week of January. The program culminated with an open studio and family day on January 4th.
Sophie Neate is a Melbourne-based photographer and ceramist. Her practice involves photography as archive, document and memory, and the gestural quality of structures through ceramic sculpture and installation.
Participating artist residency in China has been a long time ambition of Sophie because of her love for China’s rich history in ceramic arts and her curiosity in Chinese contemporary art. Having the opportunity to work with the Chinese community by teaching at the Jiuqian Volunteer Centre was a great way to learn about Chinese culture and way of life. The students in her class became her teachers in this sense.
